Featured Student Work

Color Theory

Color Theory is an advanced, elective module for College of Journalism and Mass Communications majors in the third semester of Visual Communications coursework.

Students are challenged to explore Adobe Illustrator and artboards by creating five color palettes, and a separate document with three artboards. Two of the square artboards are used for standalone designs, while one must be a repeating pattern using Illustrator's pattern tool.

I guide students through artistic choices in critique and help students problem-solve and troubleshoot issues with the patterns and objects they've built.

Videography / Mobile

While videography is not one of my personal strengths, I love working through video challenges with students on their Video 1, 2, and 3 modules in the Visual Communications courses.

As a Marketing Manager at a tech company, one of my primary goals was to review and offer edits on video collateral for broader marketing campaigns to specific target audiences.

Offering possible solutions for storytelling cohesiveness, lighting and color grading, audio, and overall quality are all strategies for helping to improve student video work.

Web Design

While not many of the students come into CoJMC with experience in Web design, I stress the importance of understanding basic HTML and CSS in the professional setting to my students.

Like all of the JOMC 130 courses, web is learned through a flipped model where students begin their learning during lab hours and share an in-progress piece during critique.

To help students, we identify common issues among fellow students and look for common solutions. We look at the raw CSS and HTML files and work through hosting issues on CreateUNL.

Attention to detail is stressed as small errors can lead to big issues when HTML and CSS is pushed live.

Photography

When helping students through Photography modules, I guide their shot selection and help with framing, camera settings, and general artistic direction during in-class critiques and on Canvas.

Students capture a variety of specific shots, all in manual mode, after completing equipment training.  I work directly with students on equipment training and testing and help them check out the proper equipment for their assignments.

CoJMC has many incredible photographers who just need a little nudge in the right direction sometimes.

Layout

Layout modules require a variety of student skills, including basic InDesign proficiency and a knowledge and understanding of basic for-print layout considerations. I help students balance the principals of design with print considerations to create layout templates.

Some students go above and beyond the assignment requirements to create stunning work.
